Me and my celebrity memoirs 🤪Kerry Washington did a fabulous job narrating the audio version。 The memoir talked about her success and path to acting but also family secrets that led to who she is。 It felt a little fragmented as she told stories out of order and would come back to stories she had already mentioned, but in a totally different part of the book。 Aside from the disjointed nature of the book, it was really good!

Kerry Washington is a skilled storyteller both in screen and off。 Hearing her read her story (I listened in Audible) will capture your attention just like she does playing a lead role on screen。 Don’t miss out on this。

Amazing! Favorite memoir of this year

captivating exploration of identityKerry Washington explores her origin and her journey through her career with intensity and fervor。 Her search for identity has many twists and turns and she lays bare the struggles she has endured。 It was very intriguing and led me to examine some of my own views of family。

Andree Miller

A beautifully written book of fundamentally exploring and finding identity。

Love Kerry。 An alright memoir。

I love Kerry Washington’s acting, her adamantly keeping her private life with her husband and children private。 But a memoir, oh my, it was a nothing burger。 Her teenage antics were not outrageous and since she graduated from Spence she had a lot of wind beneath her wings。 While her parents didn’t have the bucks like some of her school friends they gave her a middle class upbringing that was great。 Her Daddy was not her bio Dad but in this day and age and even when she was born, so what。 So many I love Kerry Washington’s acting, her adamantly keeping her private life with her husband and children private。 But a memoir, oh my, it was a nothing burger。 Her teenage antics were not outrageous and since she graduated from Spence she had a lot of wind beneath her wings。 While her parents didn’t have the bucks like some of her school friends they gave her a middle class upbringing that was great。 Her Daddy was not her bio Dad but in this day and age and even when she was born, so what。 So many kids don’t have Dad’s they can claim。 So there ya’ go… 。。。more

I love Kerry。 So I was super excited to read her memoir。 I do feel like the order and structure of the book was off。 Also, i felt she could’ve dove deeper into some things that were briefly discussed; like her relationships, the emotions she felt auditioning for scandal, the juggles of being a working mom, etc。 I would’ve loved to learn more about her husband, but again, Kerry is very private and I appreciate the parts she did share。 Her memoir was a beautiful story to tell about self love, the I love Kerry。 So I was super excited to read her memoir。 I do feel like the order and structure of the book was off。 Also, i felt she could’ve dove deeper into some things that were briefly discussed; like her relationships, the emotions she felt auditioning for scandal, the juggles of being a working mom, etc。 I would’ve loved to learn more about her husband, but again, Kerry is very private and I appreciate the parts she did share。 Her memoir was a beautiful story to tell about self love, the importance of family and community, and the revelations that’s needed to live in your truth。Thank you for sharing so much about yourself, Kerry。 。。。more

Outstanding! Even better when read aloud by the author。

I hate to say this, but I didn’t love this。 I liked reading the parts about her time on Scandal and her other movies and shows, but the rest of the book I wasn’t connecting with。

Instagram's magic worked on me, after many many posts about this book I couldn't resist to check it out and after a few pages I couldn't put it down。Kerry's life turned out to be way more interesting than I thought it would and she delivered it in such an honest and heartfelt way that you can't help but empathize。 I particularly related immensely to the way she felt about her relationship with her parents, how there was always an invisible distance between them and how she always felt like somet Instagram's magic worked on me, after many many posts about this book I couldn't resist to check it out and after a few pages I couldn't put it down。Kerry's life turned out to be way more interesting than I thought it would and she delivered it in such an honest and heartfelt way that you can't help but empathize。 I particularly related immensely to the way she felt about her relationship with her parents, how there was always an invisible distance between them and how she always felt like something was missing。I finished the book with a profound respect for Kerry, the way she has navigated her life, particularly those early years as an actor when she was so firm about only choosing characters that would portray black women in a more meaningful way。 I'm sure it must have been a very tough decision for someone that already had less opportunities than her competition。The last pages felt like a lump in the throat, but she delivered them with such love and kindness that you can't help but rejoice with her as she gains a deeper understanding and acceptance of how here life unfolded。 。。。more

A compelling, thought-provoking, and vulnerable testimony to the complexity of our humanity。 I have always been a fan of Kerry Washington but this memoir deepens my respect and appreciation for her。 We are quick to applaud high-performers but we rarely know what’s going on behind doors or on the inside。 Yet, we all struggle and face our own battles。 Kerry’s story is a testimony to finding an escape from our troubles in our work or passions and to eventually developing the courage to live, embrac A compelling, thought-provoking, and vulnerable testimony to the complexity of our humanity。 I have always been a fan of Kerry Washington but this memoir deepens my respect and appreciation for her。 We are quick to applaud high-performers but we rarely know what’s going on behind doors or on the inside。 Yet, we all struggle and face our own battles。 Kerry’s story is a testimony to finding an escape from our troubles in our work or passions and to eventually developing the courage to live, embrace, and accept our truth with all of its complexities and imperfections。 “Blood is thicker than water but love is thicker than blood。” 。。。more

I am a huge fan of Kerry Washington, but once finished, this book left me only with the desire to rewatch Scandal。 I wanted so much more。 I feel where they went wrong was the press tour for the book because most of the “aha” moments have already been revealed。

Fantastic! I fell in love with Kerry Washington, watching her star on Scandal for all those years but to read her story, and to hear it in her own voice, makes me admire her all that much more。 I love a great memoir where someone is vulnerable and shares their story, this one is one you won’t forget。

I’m a huge fan of Kerry Washington, and this book did not disappoint! It was truly eye opening and a remarkably honest book about family, love, and the ups and downs of life。 The timeline was, at times, a little confusing, but other than that, loved this book!

Well written enjoyable to read memoir。 I loved Scandal and it was fun to learn more about the life of this actress。 She is an impressive woman。

Life As Monae

This felt very staccato。 Kerry, over the years, has been a rather reclusive celebrity, especially with regard to her marriage, kids, and family。 With that in mind, this memoir felt like a controlled narrative of what she wanted to share with the world。 It takes boldness and courage, and she went deep into the areas of her life that she wanted to share but it was not an overall invite into Kerry as a whole。 If she writes another memoir, I will read it because I know she still has more to share, w This felt very staccato。 Kerry, over the years, has been a rather reclusive celebrity, especially with regard to her marriage, kids, and family。 With that in mind, this memoir felt like a controlled narrative of what she wanted to share with the world。 It takes boldness and courage, and she went deep into the areas of her life that she wanted to share but it was not an overall invite into Kerry as a whole。 If she writes another memoir, I will read it because I know she still has more to share, whenever she decides that she wants to。 。。。more

This book has received so many mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it。 I could never speak down about anyone who is telling their story honestly and exposing so much about themselvesIt is clear that Kerry wrote this book more for her own healing vs。 our entertainment and pleasure。 I think she was very brave & it was very insightful to walk thru her journey with her。I am amazed how many people have talked down about this book, when she is telling her story of finding herself and identifying who she is。 This book has received so many mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it。 I could never speak down about anyone who is telling their story honestly and exposing so much about themselvesIt is clear that Kerry wrote this book more for her own healing vs。 our entertainment and pleasure。 I think she was very brave & it was very insightful to walk thru her journey with her。I am amazed how many people have talked down about this book, when she is telling her story of finding herself and identifying who she is。 I found some parts eye opening & reflective of her journey and could apply some of those feelings to myself。。 and things I could never put my finger on。This book may not be for everyday, but dang ya’ll。。 can’t believe ya’ll bashing someone for being vulnerable and telling THEIR story。 Thanks for sharing Kerry! 。。。more

Aside from a few issues I had with the writing, I really enjoyed this memoir。 Kerry Washington is one of the most talented actors, and from the way she describes her approach/methodology in this book, it makes sense why。 I didn’t think the framing of her family secret at the beginning and end or the use of water as a motif was necessary, and I wish Washington had spent more time describing the significance of some events of her life (several times, she would drop a few sentences about these then Aside from a few issues I had with the writing, I really enjoyed this memoir。 Kerry Washington is one of the most talented actors, and from the way she describes her approach/methodology in this book, it makes sense why。 I didn’t think the framing of her family secret at the beginning and end or the use of water as a motif was necessary, and I wish Washington had spent more time describing the significance of some events of her life (several times, she would drop a few sentences about these then wouldn’t return to the subject)。 The bottom line, though, is that the stories she shared resonated with and inspired me。 Some parts that stood out to me: her beginnings in acting and how she used her talents to educate and make a difference; the cultural significance of scandal and how she actually became involved in the political process (and inspired others to do so); the way she used her own experiences to inspire her acting and how she retroactively saw her experiences reflected in her acting; her view on parenting, that is, parents being changed for the better by their kids (an alternative to the common view, she explains); her struggles with binge eating and how connecting with her body via dance and meditation helped her; the joy of being immersed in a different culture learning a new language; and how one of the worst things one could do is lie when confronted by someone who feels suspicious, in other words, making someone distrust his or herself and their sense of the world。 And some other favorite parts, in direct quotes: “My obsession with food and exercise and my body weakened with my eyes turned outward to community building and civic engagement…” “To be an actor is to consider the humanity in others。 It’s my job to see the world through other peoples eyes and to step into their shoes。 To me, there’s a connection between the craft of acting and the belief in the importance of human rights…”“Olivia Pope had helped me step into being Kerry Washington。”As a “gladiator,” I’m so glad to have had the chance to hear more of this amazing actress’s story。 。。。more

A deeply resonant and artfully woven story of her life thus far, as shaped by a familial secret。 I am a bit sad that her story is still unfolding, with parts of the picture incomplete as her search continues。 I learned a lot about her life as an artist, an advocate, and a black woman navigating identity, the affects of familial infertility, and self-discovery。 Grateful to read her experience and see how her family dynamics have changed as this revelation has come to light。
